Otsuka Holdings Co., Ltd., (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President and Representative Director, CEO: Tatsuo Higuchi) announced that its group companies, PT Otsuka Indonesia, PT Amerta Indah Otsuka, PT Widatra Bhakti, and PT Lautan Otsuka Chemical, have adopted CO2-free electricity* derived from renewable energy. This is expected to reduce the Otsuka group’s annual CO2 emissions by 94,000 tons, or approximately 13%.

Carbon neutrality is one of the Otsuka group’s environmental material issues. The group has set a medium-term target of reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 2028 compared to 2017, and it is making an active group-wide effort to reduce environmental impact. In Japan, the group has adopted renewable energy such as CO2-free electricity and solar power generation, and streamlined energy use by employing cogeneration facilities and other means. Outside Japan, Indonesia—where the Otsuka group’s pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and chemical businesses have operations—is the region accounting for the group’s second largest CO2 emissions after Japan. The adoption of CO2-free electricity derived from geothermal power generation at four group companies is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 60% per year in Indonesia.

Based on its 2050 Environmental Vision, “Net Zero,” the Otsuka group aims to reduce the total environmental impact of its business activities to zero. The group is working to achieve targets it has set for addressing the three environmental material issues of carbon neutrality, circular economy, and water neutrality, group-wide. Going forward, the Otsuka group will continue to move forward with various initiatives, leveraging group-wide collaboration to help build a decarbonized society, and thereby a sustainable society.

* Virtually CO2-free electricity utilizing environmental value derived from renewable energy that does not emit CO2
