Otsuka Group Holds Completion Ceremony for New Cogeneration System and Hydrogen Utilization Facilities Reducing CO2 Emissions With Cutting-Edge Technology

Otsuka Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tatsuo Higuchi) announced today that a ceremony to mark the completion of construction of Otsuka Chemical’s cogeneration system1 and new facilities for the utilization of hydrogen, a fuel from which much is expected as a next-generation energy source, was held on April 23, 2024.

Otsuka group has laid out its 2050 Environmental Vision, “Net Zero,” which aims to reduce the total environmental impact across all its business activities to zero, and has identified carbon neutrality, circular economy, and water neutrality as material issues related to its environmental initiatives. For carbon neutrality, the group has set the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 20282 and is promoting the active introduction of renewable energy and efficient energy use throughout the group. As part of these efforts, we introduce cogeneration systems and utilize hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources.

The Otsuka group will continue to promote groupwide efforts to reduce its environmental impact by utilizing new technologies and solutions with the aim of helping to build a decarbonized and sustainable world.

New Hydrogen Utilization Facilities

■Objective:
To operate advanced facilities that utilize hydrogen to achieve carbon neutrality
■Overview:
Generates hydrogen through electrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable energy sources and stores it in hydrogen tanks. These facilities are designed for using hydrogen in fuel cells, hydrogen fuel boilers, and other equipment. This initiative is part of Otsuka group integrated energy management.
■Facility Overview:

*Estimated reduction of CO 2 emissions through facility use: Approx. 4 tons per year.
